Unconventional therapies for disabled persons at Baia Mare

Daniel Filipas, director executiv , asociatia Esperando, Baia Mare
- 2007-Dec-18 -
national conferences

A conference whose aim, already achieved, was to bring together unconventional therapies for disabled children and teenagers.

On the days of 4 and 5 of October, the Esperando association from Baia Mare organized the second edition of the annual conference, to promote the services offered to the disabled persons. This second edition was dear to us and we chose the theme and title- `Unconventional therapies` because we have been looking for many years all kind of methods that can add value to the work of our specialists in rehabilitation, to improve the life of our disabled children and teenagers. In this place we reunited specialists from varied domains.

In this manner we want to transmit to whoever is interested what other unconventional methods can support our cause.

Organized within the project `Unconventional`, with financial support from the Local Council Baia Marea, through S.P.A.S. (according to the law 350/2005), the project was a full success. More than 40 specialists and numerous invitees, representatives of mass-media and local authorities (including the main sponsor) took part at the event. People came from different areas of the country (Galati, Iasi, Timisoara, Zalau, Cluj Napoca, Bistrita so on) and several from abroad.

But more concrete, which were the topics? The specialist doctor in balneo-therapy and physiotherapy, Mona Medan, from the emergency hospital `Constantin Opris` Baia Mare, opened the presentation series, with a talk on the effects of hydrotherapy. `Water immersion is followed by a state of psychic comfort or even by a euphoric state (especially at children), reaction explained by the capacity of the water to facilitate the mobility of the body.`

At the same time ms. Mona Medan, underlined the need to talk about this alternative therapies and to appeal to them when other traditional methods stop or have a limited effect.

Zsuzsa Füredi from Special School in Szentesa brought to our attention the drama therapy. Simple, without huge expenses, the method is very useful.

On the stage made with the help of a few materials found at hand, Zsuzsa combines theatre with physical motion. So children do physical exercises that would not normally accept, motivated by the play itself and by the audience. This was proved ad-hoc at the conference!

Dance instructor Alex Szalkai brought a good mood with his Dance therapy. Lately the mornings at the Esperando center have been enlivened by the music and motion that bring joy to children.

In the same manner, “Inima de Copil” foundation from Galati, through ms. Cristiana Toma, presented the Art therapy. Based on what they have been doing for some time, our colleagues` presentation brought new ideas.

`Manufacturing things, drawing and molding are rich means of expression for children and teenagers, allowing them to create in reality what they have lived, seen or imagined. Teenagers are very proud when they create something that stimulates them, gaining confidence in themselves. `

Play therapy- juggling made the eyebrows of many people raise when presented in the conference programme. Daniela Hamzescu, director of the Centre for Inclusive Education `Dumitru Ciumageanu`in Timisoara and Adrian Barbu from Cluj fascinated the audience. Just like in the case of dance or visual arts, children with disabilities involved in juggling, contribute to their own rehabilitation, without effort. It a real joy!

Also there were presented other interesting methods, beside arts: therapy using animals (pets), therapy with needles so on.
