music therapy

The first rock band of youngsters with mental disabilities was established a few years ago. It was their dream to have a band, as they had seen on TV. They don’t have an excellent voice or professional instruments. For them, music represents the right to a normal life, the right to passion and it’s their joy of living. In the future, we aim at establishing a small real orchestra, at finding the way to teach several youngsters how to play the instruments. Even if we are going to try this for a year, two or ten, we strongly believe that nothing is impossible.

The first rock band of youngsters with mental disabilities was established a few years ago. It was their dream to have a band, as they had seen on TV. They don’t have an excellent voice or professional instruments. They don’t have electric guitars or keys or a record company to promote them and make them stars. They do have, however, a great desire to sing and accomplish their dreams.

At first, they sang in a surprise concert. « I was touched to tears when I saw them », Ana Mariana Ilies, the director of the Association for the Protection and Support of the Psycho-neurotic Handicap Persons in Cluj, in which the Day Center “Sf. Maria” is organized. ‘They had no guitars, they were ‘playing’ some tennis bats, while the drummer was strongly beating a cardboard box. They had made their guitars by themselves, helped by the instructor from the carpentry workshop they work in. ‘

They have no strings and they are made of two layers of thin plywood, well fretworked, in an extremely realist shape. They are nicely varnished, equipped with rope in order to be held around the neck during concerts because the youngsters also give concerts.

‘We had one as well at the seaside, where we were in a camp organized by the Center. It was awesome!’ one of the youngsters enthusiastically said. The youngsters were the ones to choose the name of the band. ‘They called themselves VIP as they are important people too’, Mrs. Ilies explains from behalf of them. As far as the song repertory is concerned, this is extremely diversified but always in fashion. The rockers keep on playing their string-less guitars and beating the only drum they have. Andrei holds the guitar the other way around, but this doesn’t stop him at all from imitating the strumming of the strings; he sways his body to the rhythm of the song with his eyes closed, imagining he is on the stage.

The rock band is related to their hobby, it’s a form of entertainment but has a very good effect on the behavior of the boys as it completes the music therapy sessions. The results of the music therapy sessions are reflected in other activities, too. For them, music represents the right to a normal life, the right to passion and it’s the joy of living. I would also like to add that we aim at organizing a real, small orchestra, at finding the way to teach several youngsters how to play instruments. Even if we are going to try this for a year, two or ten, we strongly believe that nothing is impossible.

*The Day Center “Sf.Maria” organizes a music therapy program with the support of “Music as Therapy”, from UK. Contact details for “Sf. Maria”: Phone No / Fax +4 0264 414 022 .
